CGI, computer generated images, is used to make computer animations in movies or to project images into a movie using a green screen, so that actors appear in places that aren't actual places or movie sets. A new projection technology, called Omote, now allows movie technical directors to project makeup directly onto a live model's face. The model can move around and the makeup adjusts in real-time so that it appears she really has real makeup on. It could also be used to create masks overlaying the face. They are calling it "electronic makeup". Although the creator, Nobumichi Asai, hasn't yet revealed how it is done, it is speculated that he uses initial face-mapping technology to latch on during real-time movements and accurately project various designs onto the face. As this technology advances, it could be used to place CGI overlays over an entire actors body.
